Go Bird - Tucker took a wide left ling going out. He then cut a hard right in front of the guns and went out to his bird.

Bird 2 - Straight to his bird.

Came to the line at 9:23 am.

Go Bird - Straight to the fall area and on his bird.

Bird 2 - He took a line up just left of the gunners where he hunted deep. He then came back down to his bird.

Came to the line at 9:20 am.

Go Bird - Pow! Straight to the bird.

Bird 2 - Randy went up the hill between the guns and the road on the left. Taking one turn deep then getting to the right side he went down to the tree and his bird.

Came to the line at 9:13 am

Go Bird - Straight to his bird.

Bird 2 - Went through the fall area and got deep right where he took a turn. Got out of our line of vision for a bit, but then came back to the area around the tree and to his bird.

Came to the line at 9:07 am.

Go Bird - Nellie had a good angle across the field, she turned left and went left past the guns. With a circle deep she went back out to the right and got her bird.

Bird 2 - She went up under the arc but missed her bird. She hunted deep, out of our sight for a while. She back to the fall area and then to her bird.



3rd Series - Gun Change

The gun changed for the 3rd series happened at 8:59 am after dog #32 completed the series. An hour into the 3rd series, 15 dogs have completed this series which is averaging 4 minutes per dog.

The temps is at 57 degrees and now its forecast to get up to 80 degrees today. The wind as seemed to die down coming in from the SW at 9 mph.

Go Bird - Bea powered straight to her bird.

Bird 2 - Bea went up the field to the left of the brush pile. She got deep of the guns for a loop then moved to the right of the road where she got wide left. Moving back and forth deep, she worked her way back down to get her bird.

Came to the line at 8:51 am.

Go Bird - Ravin crossed the field and went straight to her bird.

Bird 2 - She had a nice initial line almost to the bird where she took a left. She crossed to get behind the guns and hunted deep. She worked her way back to the bird.

Go Bird - Direct line to the Bird!

Bird 2 - Huck went up the left side of the field, left of the brush pile. Making two loops deep left of the guns, he crossed the road making two more turns and then got his bird.

Breeder: David Opseth    Owner: John Cunningham, Rocklin, CA

Go Bird - Carli came in just right of the bird, she made a turn left and missed it. A loop deep, she came back and got her bird.

Bird 2 - Carli fell at the base of the hill, she stopped to get her directions then proceeded up the hill and got deep of the guns for a hunt. She worked her way back to get the bird.

Came to the line at 8:38 am.

Go Bird - Straight to her bird!

Bird 2 - Trudy angled across the field to the tree. She made quick turn between the tree and the road. Moving up the hill for a loop then Trudy came back down to get her bird.



27. Toplines Everlasting Rock, "Rocky," BLM, Marc Patton

Go Bird - Rocky went under the arc, then made one loop and went to his bird.

Bird 2 - Going up the hill and under the arc on the right side of the road, Rocky then turned left went back down across the road. He went right of the tree to get his bird.

Go Bird - Rip went out wide left getting along the tree line. He got just deep of the guns then turned right and went directly to his bird.

Bird 2 - He went straight out and up the hill. He went past the guns on the left side, but then turned right and went straight across the road and down to get his bird.

Came to the line at 8:26 am.

Go Bird - Good initial line. At the second road King took a left and went left of the guns to the tree. He adjusted and came back down right to get his bird.

Bird 2 - He hunted left and deep of the guns. He went back to the right side of the road and got his bird.

Came to the line at 8:22 am.

Go Bird - Colt came in left of the guns. He took a few turns deep but quickly came back to the fall area and his bird.

Bird 2 - He went out to the area left of the guns where he hunted deep left of the road. He worked his way back across to the tree and then to his bird.

Came to the line at 8:17 am.

Go Bird - Chance angled across both roads to the fall area and quickly found his bird.

Bird 2 - He went up the hill to the left of the large brush pile. Getting just deep of the guns, Chance took a loop and hunted left and right, then quickly worked his way down to get the bird.

Came to the line at 8:03 am.

Go Bird - Tatum went wide right and got behind the tree and mound. She crossed the road, made a large loop left to get her bird.

Bird 2 - Great angle to the bird where she scooped it up!

Go Bird - M angled towards the gun - Excellent Mark!

Bird 2 - Straight out towards the guns, M turned right and went straight to her bird.


 



3rd Series - Test Dogs

Test Dog 1 - KC Back To The Future, GM "Marty

Came to the line at 7:48 am.

Go Bird - Marty went out towards the guns then hooked left and got behind them. He carried this line on to the right side and got his bird.

Bird 2 - He went out past the guns on the left side and got deep. He turned and worked his way back down to the bird.


Test Dog 2 - Just A Tubb Of Croc's, LF "TC"

Go Bird - TC has a great angle going out. She went under the arc, then go a little deep. She made a quick turn that put her on the bird.

Bird 2 - On a great line, she came out just deep of the tree. A turn there then a turn deep, she came back to the tree and then to her bird.

 


3rd Series - Land Double with Two Dead Pheasants

Test 3 is a land double. Both birds are dead roosters. Theses birds are both thrown to the right.

Bird 1 is located 242 yards from the mat on the mid right side of the field. The gunners are sitting on the left side of a gravel road that runs straight through the property. They shoot then throw the rooster across the road to the base of a tree with bushy cover surrounding the trunk. The line to this bird takes the dog down a hill on a right angle. Then up the next hill to get across the road and to the bird. There is a large clump of brush approximately 40 yards short of the gunners that can push the dogs either right towards the bird or left towards a wide open hillside.

Bird 2 is 238 yards from the mat on the handler's right side. The gunners shoot and throw to the right. The line to this bird takes the dog on a right angle down a hill. The dog must continue this angle up a hill, across two roads and then out into an open field. These gunners are sitting in a neutral position with open areas on all four sides where the dogs can hunt.


 

Day 2 - Tuesday, October 6, 2020

Good Morning from Sedalia, MO, home of the 2020 National Retriever Derby Club Championship on the beautiful property of Bob & Barbara Hayden's Wood Dale Farms. 

With day one in the books, we completed two series. Series One, Double Land with two roosters, started with dog #2 coming to the line at 8:17 am. We completed the series at 10:58 am calling back 31 dogs, one being dropped. 

The second series, Water Double with two ducks, started at 11:58 am with dog # 10 coming to the line. This series ended with two dogs being dropped and 29 callbacks. The end of series two also brought the end of our day at 3:11 pm.

The National started with a brisk morning but warming up nicely. The wind became a bit of an issue earlier in the day with having gusts of over 15 mph. All in all, it was a great day to be in the field with these amazing derby dogs.

Today, we will start the third series with the test dogs being called to the line at 7:45 am and the first running dog #18 at 8:00 am. 

The weather is just going to continue to get warmer. We are at 55 degrees, with a high of 78. However, the wind continues to be an issue as we are experiencing high winds coming in from the SW at 15 mph. We will see if this will affect the dog work.

Future Forecast - Day 2 - Tuesday, October 6th, 2020

Just giving a quick update on what the weather is looking to be tomorrow, for day 2 of the 2020 National Retriever Derby Club Championship.

We are looking at the sunrise at 7:13 am with a warmer start then today, with a temp at 55 degrees. It looks to clear and sunny all day with a high of 78 degrees with west winds between 10-15 mph.

Great weather for a great National.

Where Are They Now….past NRDC Champions…2019 Mona

2019 NDC Spark Your Enthusiasm “Mona”, BLF

2019 NDC Owner/Handler: Don English

NDC Spark Your Enthusiasm, the most recent National Derby Champion was handled in the 2019 National Derby by owner/handler Don English. She finished up her Derby career in January 2020 with a JAM at the Bluebonnet Retriever Club. Her Derby career consisted of 19 starts for a total of 22 points, 4 total placements, with one being a 1st placement; she also had 2 jams and 1 reserve jam.

Day One - In The Books

We have finished day one for the 2020 NRDC at 3:11 pm. Completing two series, we have a total of 3 dogs that got dropped.

1st Series, Land Double with Flyer Rooster and Dead Rooster started with dog #2 at 8:17 am. We had a gun change at 9:18 am after dog #14 completed its series. We average about 5 minutes per dog to complete this series which was done at 10:58 am. We had a total of 6 no bird/re-runs and one pick up by dog #6. The callbacks came out shortly after the completion of the 1st Series with 31 dogs being called back one being dropped.

2nd Series, Water Double with Drake and Hen Ducks started at 11:58 am with dog #10. The gun change happened after dog #23 completed its series at 1:20 pm. We completed all 31 dogs in just over three hours taking roughly about 6 minutes per dog to complete their series. We had no no bird/re-runs but had two dogs pick up (14 & 19).The callbacks came back shortly after the end of the series at 3:11 pm with 29 dogs being called back and 2 being dropped.

We will start back tomorrow morning with test dogs at 7:45 am and the first running dog # 18 at 8:00 am.


Callbacks to the 3rd Series

29 dogs called back to the 3rd series are: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 15, 16, 17, 18, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31 and 32.

Dog dropped: #14 and 19.

We will be starting the 3rd series with dog # 18.

This will conclude Day 1 of the 2020 NRDC Championship. We will start back tomorrow morning with test dogs at 7:45 am and the first running dog # 18 at 8:00 am.

Completion of 2nd Series - Water Double with Drake & Hen Ducks

Our 2nd Series, a Water Double with a Drake & Hen Ducks, came to an end at 3:11 pm.

We started this series at 11:58 am with dog #10. One hour and twenty-two minutes after starting we had our gun change after dog #23 completed his series. Within our first 14 dogs, two picked up (14 & 19). We got back on our way at 1:28 pm with dog #24. Things seemed to smooth out and we had some really great runs this afternoon. 

We completed 31 dogs in three hours and nine minutes, which average out to be approximately 6 minutes per dog.

Right Bird - Redd went up the hill and under the arc to the top. He took a short turn right then came back across and down to his bird.

Left Bird - Up the hill and got behind the guns. Redd turned back down and to the left to get his duck.

Right Bird - Excellent line and mark.

Left Bird - Rush went up the right side of the guns and went across the back of the gunners. Then he came down to get his bird.


 


7. Legacys Coal-Fired Simmer Down, "Ash," BLM, Cynean Bartlett

FC-AFC Watermark's PF Coal-Fired And Cookin ex Atlasta Chance 

Right Bird - Great line. Ash ran just to the right of the bird. He quickly turned left and got it.

Left Bird - Nice angle across the pond. Going towards the guns, Ash took a hard right going around the back of the guns. A few quick turns and back down he got his mark.

Right Bird - Tucker went into the pond going straight across. Going up the hill getting under the arc, he came back down then turned to get his bird.

Left Bird - He went across the pond, up the hill towards the guns. He turned left then to the top of the hill and came back down and got his duck.

2018 NDC Seasides Got To Get Up And Try “Pink”, BLF

2018 NDC Owner/Handler: Robbie Knutson

NDC Seasides Got To Get Up And Try, our 2nd National Derby Champion in 2018 was handled by owner Robbie Knutson. Pink’s Derby career ended on a high note on March 15, 2019 taking a 1st place at Central Savannah River Area Retriever Club. She accumulated a total of 41 Derby points in 26 starts, placing 12 times with 2 of those placements being wins. She also started in one Qualifying stake and won it, too! Since Pink’s NDC title, Mark & Suzanne Medford have become the proud new owners. She started running the major stakes in 2020 with a total of 14 starts which have already lead to 2 placements and 2 Jams in the Open.

Right Bird - Randy went into the pond, exited then drove the hill and just missed the bird on the right side. He took one loop then turned into the bird.

Left Bird - He took the land bridge all the way across the hill. He went up past the guns and turned left, then came back down the other side to get the bird.

Right Bird - Chance went up the hill under the arc and across the top of the hill. He came down and worked back to the right and got his bird.

Left Bird - He took the far left corner of the pond, then drove the hill up right of the guns. He took a loop behind the guns to come across and down to the bird.

Right Bird - Nellie went up to the left of the fall to the top of the hill. She came back down to get her bird.

Right Bird - Bea took a right into the pond. She adjusted her line and came up under the arc. She turned left and got her duck.

Left Bird - She took the right side of the pond. Having a nice angle up the hill to get under the arc of the bird, Bea made a quick adjustment and got her bird.

Right Bird - Ravin took the land bridge half way across then got into the pond. She drove the hill to her bird.

Left Bird - Getting a little bit of water, Ravin did get on a nice line up the hill, but missed the duck. She made a quick turn and it put her on the bird.

Right Bird - Huck went throw the middle of the pond. He angled left up the hill directly to his bird.

Left Bird - Good swim, Huck angled up the hill towards the guns. He continued to angle left and missed the bird just left of it. A quick turn and he got his duck.

Right Bird - Carli came up the hill just left of the bird. She adjusted and come in on top of it.

Left Bird - Excellent line across the pond straight towards the fall. Carli angled to the far left top of the hill. She quickly went right which brought her down to the bird.

Right Bird - Trudy went up wide left to the top. She came back down to the right and got her duck.

Left Bird - She cut the right side of the pond at an angle up towards the guns. She looped at the top of the hill to come back down and get her bird.

Right Bird - Rocky went up the hill then curled back down to get his duck.

Left Bird - Nice angle across the pond that continued up the to the area of the bird. He went straight left and snatched up his duck.

Came to the line at 1:40 pm.

Right Bird - Pinned it - Rip went straight up the hill to the bird.

Left Bird - Great angle across the pond. He carried this line just left of the fall to the top of the hill. He came straight back down to the bird.

Right Bird - Good job getting this duck.

Left Bird - Excellent angle across the pond towards his bird. King angled up the hill, with a quick move to the right he put his nose on the bird.

Right Bird - Nice angle through the water, then Colt went straight to his duck.

Left Bird - He cut the corner of the pond, then angled across the hill. Making one loop, Colt went to his bird. 



2nd Series - Gun Change

We are in the middle of our gun change that started at 1:20 pm after dog #23 completed his run. This 2nd Series - Water Double with Two Ducks, started with dog # 10 coming to the line at 11:58 am. One hour and twenty-two into this series we have had 14 dogs complete it, averaging 6.5 minutes per dog.

The left bird seems to be the trouble bird on this series thus far. We have had two dogs (14 & 19) pick up.

The temperatures keep climbing. We are currently at a sunny 68 degrees. The wind is staying steady at 14 mph coming from the SSW.

We will be starting back soon with dog #24 coming to the line.

Right Bird - Chance went straight throw the pond, exiting and going up the hill to get his his duck.

Left Bird - Nice angle across the pond and continued this line up the hill and to the bird.

Gun Change happened after his run at 1:20 pm.

Right Bird - Ace came out of water a little wide left. He made a quick turn and scooped up his duck.

Left Bird - Ace had a beautiful angle across the pond towards the bird. He came out under the arc, went to the top of the hill, then worked back down and out to get his bird. 

He finished his series in 7 minutes ending at 1:08 pm.

Right Bird - Ruby had a nice line into the water. Exiting, she went straight up to the guns and to the top of the hill. She turned left and came back down to get her bird.

Left Bird - The handler picked the dog up.
